How is Dave Doing?

We are pleased with where Dave is. Some of you know that typically ALS starts from the feet up, or the head down. Dave's is the head down variety. The ALS started in Dave's hands/ arms and throat/voice. As of today he has lost complete mobility in his arms and hands. His voice is good somedays, not so good other days. The phone is becoming almost impossible, even for those who know him well. The good news is Dave's respitory is strong! This is very good! The mobility in Dave's leg's is diminishing, along with his balance. Although we have an electric wheel chair ready to go, Dave is using it more as a quad! Yes, he has gotten it stuck!, had a tumble! and managed our very steep, gravel driveway! He had quite a bit of "road rash" but came up smiling! Saying,"You should see the other guy"! He needed stitches on that very stubburn chin of his!

Some men seem to excel in whatever circumstances they find themselves in.

Spending the week with Dave did help me to understand some of the harsh realities that living with ALS is having on the whole family. And yet at the same time Dave seems to have peace about his life, while he still tries to push himself physically.

I just wouldn't get too many scars on that face of yours, Dave or Craig will start to think he is the best looking one of the family!

Love you,

Pam

Don't let the road rash fool you. Dave was having the time of his life. When I got to the bottom of the hill, Dave was being attended by his beautiful sister and lovely niece, had blood dripping off his chin, and had a huge smile on his face.

Nobody saw the accident. His version was about being stuck. Knowing Dave, even as an out of town brother-in-law, I have my suspisions that he was attempting to get air.

Later that evening, while he was being attended to by no less than five anxious women, with a bag of peas taped to his chin, the glint in his eye made me think that he was already planning a bigger jump.
